Social work research in the field of acquired brain injury
INSWABI seeks to advance practice through (i) undertaking research initiatives in the area of ABI and (ii) promoting the research undertaken by INSWABI members in ABI. Some of our achievements are listed below.
INSWABI research initiatives
INSWABI members worked together to produce the first book dedicated to social work practice in the field of ABI. We also commissioned a systematic scoping review on all social work authored peer reviewed publications published between 1970 and 2014. Finally, we have developed a family outcome measure (Family Outcome Measure-40).
Contemporary Perspectives on Social Work in Acquired Brain Injury
Contemporary Perspectives on Social Work in Acquired Brain Injury is the first book to have ever been produced that exclusively focuses on social work practice in the field of ABI.
The book started as a special double issue of the Journal of Social Work in Disability and Rehabilitation titled Contemporary Perspectives on Social Work in Acquired Brain Injury 2016 Vol 15, issues 3-4. This double issue was co-guest edited by Professor Grahame Simpson and Professor Francis Yuen (Editor-in-Chief of J of the journal). It involved contributions from many INSWABI members. In fact, nine of the ten articles have at least one author who was an INSWABI member.
The journal’s publisher was so pleased with the double issue that they decided it could be turned into a book. So the 11 journal articles became the following 11 chapters listed below (INSWABI members underlined). Any royalties from the book will go to supporting the INSWABI website.
