Systematic Scoping Review

INSWABI commissioned a systematic scooping review to identify all social work-authored peer review journal articles, chapters and books addressing social work practice in ABI among adults of working age, as well as evaluate their quality and impact.

The review was conducted by INSWABI members Andy Mantell, Grahame Simpson, Martha Vungkhanching, Thomas Strandberg and Patti Simonson along with Kate Jones.

In the 40- year period from 1975 to 2014, 115 items were published that met the search criteria (intervention studies, n = 10; observational studies, n = 52; literature reviews, n = 6; expert opinion or policy analysis, n =   39; and others, n =   8). The publications could be grouped into five major fields of practice: families, social inclusion, military, inequalities and psychological adjustment. There was a significant increase in the number of publications over each decade which is a positive indicator for future social work research in this field.

Family Outcome Measure-40

The FOM-40 has been designed to document the current state of family members and the family system along the domains represented by the subscales in acute hospital, rehabilitation and long-term community settings. It can also be used to evaluate the efficacy of family support interventions and services by enabling the documentation of FOM-40 scores pre- and post-intervention or service admission/discharge.

The 40 items are organised into seven subscales. The subscales are: Family member coping (8 items), Family cohesion (5 items), Support demands (burden) (7 items), Relative adjustment (5 items), Adequacy of service support (5 items), Family member resilience (5 items), and Sustainability of family support (5 items).

The FOM-40 was co-developed by Grahame Simpson and Julie Winstanley in collaboration with the following INSWABI members: Karen Sasaki (Canada), Karen Thompson (Australia), Donna Lambden-Rowe(Australia),  Denise Young (Australia), Marianne Bush (Australia),  Judy Dawson (Australia), Zena Pigden (New Zealand), Patti Simonson (United Kingdom), Irene Nagy (Australia), Steve Wiseman (United Kingdom), Sonia Payne (Australia), Brigitte Lane (Australia), Simon Eggington (United Kingdom), Glenda McAlister (Australia), Georgina Hanna (Australia).
